That is some of the WORST live guitar playing I've ever heard. This guy makes no attempt at playing cleanly or in time. Jerry Garcia was more understandable and melodic.

But I'm sure the studio stuff is better. This is insane 60's porn music. Helter Skelter baby.

The point of the post was that if u were hip enough and open minded enough to pick up TMV's "Deloused....." and were moved by it then one would be in for a treat to discover that there are live sanctioned concerts in which one could check the live treatments of a really good band.

Your post is like saying, well for arguments sake at least. Lets say one had never ever heard Steve Gadd before, but, had only witnessed a video bite of him playing those sorry assed triplet tom fills (ala Buddy Rich Scholarship finale), and then say maybe posting on a site like this and proclaiming that Gadd plays these sorry assed triplet tom fills that make Alex Van Halen look like the second coming of Tony Williams. How could one say something so ignorant like that without being prompted to know that Gadd has recorded some of the most amazing drumming in modern times.

See what im getting at?

Do yourself a favour, go get 'Deloused in the Comatorium', enjoy it for what it is: a very good album that exsists in a sea of crap. Better yet go try practicing to it, then go do some research on TMV's guitarist(u would be shocked at how good he is),then go back to the comatorium.com site and notice that there are NUMEROUS live shows to check out, then u should attempt to post something relevant and intelligent.

Oh gee, I'm SO sorry for not posting something intelligent.

You see Jerry Garcia is a guitarist with an undeserving reputation as some sort of genius when in fact, all he really does is noodle...just like this cat. But Jerry does it more melodic.

As I said, I listened to a live cut and it was just sloppy and I can hear he was trying to go for it, but Ornette Coleman resolves his solos more thoughtfully. He makes Charles Lloyd sound like Barry Manilow.

I listened to a studio cut and as I thought, it sounds better, the drummer and vocalist sound like they were in At the Drive In and are pretty good.

But the guitarist, from that live cut, is not very good at all. There's one point where he gets so out, it sounds like a 14 year old's idea of "out".

Sorry to insult you with an alternate opinion. Well, not really...thanks for turning me on to them tho.

I couldn't agree with you more...TMV is without a doubt some of the hippest shit I've ever heard! I posted about them quite awhile ago and I still listen very regularly. I was fortunate enough to get a copy of the record before it was released and I knew they were going to turn the popular concepts of music upside down. Jon Theodore is so incredible and his drums sound great! Unfortunately,most people dismiss something that doesn't digest immediately. It takes some time to absorb everything they have to offer. One word,for me,to describe Deloused..NECESSARY!

Benrand..Omar(guitar) and Cedric(vox) were the founding members of At The Drive In. When they split some guys went on to form Sparta and Omar and Cedric formed TMV. If you are able,you should check out some other tracks...trust me. Most people that I played it for didn't care for it...but....they all dig it now. I respect your opinion,I just think that you might find some interesting stuff(not to mention the great drumming!)

I couldn't get past what the guitarist was doing on that cut...it was just wanky for the sake of wanky...in that I mena that he was trying to be atonal but just totally missing it.


There's one bit where he sounds totally lost and another where he isn't playing the riff correctly and it sounds like crap.

the drummer isn't bad, no doubt. Guitarist needs to practice his scales and fingering exercises.

Sounds like they aspire to Ozric Tentacles but can't quite get there.

I have been fortunate enough to spend some time with the MV when they toured with the chili peppers in Europe. Jon Theodore is an incredibly humble and nice guy. I really believe he will become one of the greatest drummers around. He reminded me of a young Tony Williams, he plays with an incredible fire and passion that I haven't seen in any other players that came out since probably the early nineties. The cool thing about the band is that they listen to probably any style of music you can think of. (which is quite clear if you listen to their records ofcourse) they have a huge knowledge of music.
Omar has recorded a project with John Frusciante and Flea of the chili peppers that they told me they wanted to ask Brian Blade to play on, should be amazing.
Anyway, I can imagine some people might criticise the music. You have to understand that they improvise soooo much when they perform live, and they are absolutely not afraid to take ANY chances and play what they feel. If you play like that, mistakes simply do not exist, but ofcourse sometimes it works better than other times. I have seen them on amazing nights as well as 'off' nights.
Beats, I had a link with some mp3's of a Jam between Omar, Frusciante and Theodore but unfortunately when I posted this I discovered it is gone. Hopefully it'll pop up somewhere again.
Anybody who likes Jon Theodores playing should also check out some of the other records he played on. For example, he plays a fantastic Afrobeat track on a record called 'new features' by HIM. He is also in a band called Golden.

But really...

If you have to ask, you'll never know.
